Have you removed the excess hair from the drain but it’s clogged? This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to reach out to drain cleaning companies (however, if it’s severe, you should). With a few hacks up your sleeves, you can open the drain on your own. Try these…

Use a Wire Hanger

Take an old wire coat hanger and straighten it up. Bend one of its ends for creating a small hock.  Insert it into the drain and start fishing. This will catch everything that was clogging the drain. Once the filth is out, run the drain with hot water to clear the last bits.

Throw Shampoo

If your toilet bowl is clogged, try using shampoo. Yes, you heard it right. Add a few drops of shampoo into the toilet and pour a bucket of hot water on top of it. Let it sit for 10 minutes.  You will be surprised to see how quickly it unclogs the drain. You might have to repeat this process for better results.

Unclog With Caustic Soda

Before you use caustic soda, make sure you are wearing eye protection and gloves. This chemical can cause burns. Here is what you need to do. Pour ¾ gallon of cold water into a buck bucket. Add 3 cups of caustic soda and stir. You will see bubbles while this happens and that’s okay.

Pour this mixture into the clogged drain. Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes and flush the drain. Add boiling water on top to be sure the caustic soda is removed from the way.

Salt and Baking Soda

Mix half a cup of salt with half a cup of baking soda. Pour it down the drain. Wait for 10 to 20 minutes and then add boiling water on top. A small chemical reaction will occur that should dissolve all the blockage.

Use Plunger

Get an old fashioned plunger and start plunging. This might only work for minor blockage. To get started, make sure the plunger is submerged completely. Then push to unclog the drain via water pressure.

Pour Boiling Water Down the Drain

This is the easiest trick in the book and it works well if the blockage is small. You can use it for opening kitchen sinks clogged because of grease. Hot water liquefies the fat and makes them spread down the drain further.  This technique is not recommended on porcelain sink bowls and PVC drains.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Mix baking soda and vinegar in equal proportion. Pour the mixture down the drain and wait for 45 to 60 minutes. Pour water on top to dislodge the blockage.

If you are using this trick to unclog a bathtub drain, place the stopper on the drain once you pour down the baking soda and vinegar mix. Instead of pouring boiling water, fill the bathtub with water and remove the stopper. The water pressure created as a result will unclog the drain in no time.

Use Enzyme Cleaners

Enzyme cleaners can be effective in drain unclogging gas well. However, they take a little more time than usual.  The cleaners use bacteria that feed on the organic matter in the clog and clear the drain.

Get a Cable Auger

If the DIY wire or plunger didn’t work, buy a cable auger from the market. It’s also called drain snake.

Remove the overflow plate from your tub. This will remove the stopper linkage as well. Insert the cable down the tube to about 30 inches. Turn the hand crank and keep pushing forward.  Keep going until the cable passes all the way through the P-trap. Now retrieve the cable. After this, pour hot water down the drain and this shall clear everything.

Use a Dish Detergent

Just like the shampoo, dish detergent can help clear the drain as well. However, it only works if the drain is caused by grease. This means you can also use it in the kitchen sink as well as the toilet.

Mix ¼ cup of detergent with boiling water and pour this mix into the drain. If you are unclogging a toilet, you can also use a plunger to apply pressure when necessary.

These hacks will solve your problem if the drain clog is minor. In case of a major clog, call the drain contractors Manhattan for a proper fix.
